The commercial banking industry in Africa’s copper producer, Zambia, has observed a pattern in board oversight that has former central bankers head the governance committee’s. Just recently, Absa Plc appointed former Deputy Governor Operations Dr. Austin Mwape while Standard Chartered Bank has former Governor Dr. Caleb Fundanga as its chairman. Other banks include Indo Zambia whose board is chaired by former Governor Dr. Michael Gondwe. UBA Zambia has given these appointments a similar but unique twist by appointing former Deputy Governor Administration Dr. Tukiya Kankasa Mabula to head its board defying the gender odds making her the first female chairperson of the banks board.

A Harvard Law graduate (LLB) with a Doctorate of Philosophy (PHD) in law from London University comes with a pedigree of excellence having served with the regulator, Bank of Zambia for 23-years of which 14-years were at Deputy Governor Administration level and 9-years as the central banks Secretary in a Legal Advisory capacity. Before joining the central bank she served as a Consultant for TKM and Associates.

With a an immeasurable wealth of knowledge on banking regulation, her acumen and experience will add immense value to UBA in these uncertain times where the art of banking is subjected to rapid evolving risk and business landscape. Dr. Mabula’s appointment will no doubt make regulatory compliance for UBA a seamless priority.

Other bodies she remains a board member of include, World Bank Group Advisory Council on Gender Development, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Women leadership Fund, FinEquity and the Kayula Childhood Cancer Foundation.
