After a series of operating hurdles leading to business rescue when South African Airways dodged liquidation, the over 80 year old flyer is ready to hit the African skies on September 23. This was according to a media statement shared by the Airline. The last SAA was in the skies was 2019 just before the COVID19 pandemic started and has been grounded through the period the globe was on lock down while the state grappled with business rescue options.
“After months of diligent work, we are delighted that SAA is resuming service and we look forward to welcoming on board our loyal passengers and flying the South African flag. We continue to be a safe carrier and adhering to COVID19 protocols,” Interim Chief Executive Officer Thomas Kgokolo said.
SAA is geared to commence regional flights from Johannesburg to Cape Town, Accra, Kinshasa, Harare,Lusaka and Maputo.
“The aviation sector is currently going through a testing period, and we are aware of the tough challenges that lie ahead in the coming weeks. We thank South Africa for the support we have received in getting us to where we are today. As we are now poised for takeoff, we see this as a major milestone for SAA and the country,” Kgokolo said.
The aviation industry was suppressed by an acute pandemic through lock downs, travel bans that has seen a compression of business impacting operating resilience. Global re-opening after a vaccination rollout has signaled hope for the industry as travel, business and tourism steadily rebound.
