Zambia’s leading private airline Proflight Zambia on 05 November not only proved their commitment to being the preferred airline in Africa’s red metal hotspot but showed how committed they are in championing the wildlife and tourism agenda when it facilitated the airlifting of Olimba M’tima orphaned elephant. Proflight Zambia, Game Rangers International (GRI) and National Wildlife Authority (NWA) in a joint operation helped save an orphaned elephant whose name in Nyanja means ‘strong hearted’ to safety in the Lilayi Elephant Nursery from Mfuwe (one of Zambia’s elite tourist hotspots located in the eastern part of the country).
Olimba M’tima was passenger number 49 on the famous Dash 8 aircraft flight number P00805 which departed Mfuwe international airport at 11.05am on board over 40 tourists.
Lilayi Elephant Nursery is Zambia’s famous elephant hotspot which featured in the recent released Holiday in the Wild by Kristen Davis and Rob Lowe. With the rise in poaching, the GRI and NWA have resiliently worked around the clock to save Zambia’s wildlife. One such initiative was to save Olimba M’tima by moving her to the nursery so as to preserve her life. Elephants are an attractive asset for poachers that hunt for their ivory tusks worth millions of dollars.
Proflight remains committed to contributing to the Zambian tourism agenda by not only flying tourists to key spots such as Mfuwe, Lower Zambia and Livingstone but through offering solutions such as the airlifts in question.
